2020-10-11　特朗普上月底簽署行政命令，宣布全國採礦業進入緊急狀態，以加快礦業開發，確保美國稀土及關鍵礦材的供應。不過美國生產武器軍備、高科技產品等必不可少的原材料稀土及其他關鍵礦材，目前主要依賴中國出口。
 
2020-10-11　美國目前由中國直接進口80%的稀土元素，另有部分供應間接來自中國。目前很多重要的礦材並未在美國生產，當中包括用於發光二極管和手機半導體的鎵（gallium）。美國的重晶石（barite）有一半來自中國，可用於美國石油生產的水力壓裂技術。
 
2020-10-11　美國直至80年代是全球最大的稀土供應商，但由於中國的環境法規較為寬鬆，令開採相對容易，助相關產業在中國興起。如今美國只有一座位於加州的Mountain Pass稀土礦，並沒有稀土加工設施。
